Paul Scholes has slammed Manchester United’s defending during their Champions League defeat to Galatasaray on Tuesday night, while claiming Raphael Varane’s ‘legs looked sluggish’.

Erik ten Hag’s side succumbed to their second straight defeat in all competitions, with Wilfried Zaha, Kerem Akturkoglu and Mauro Icardi scoring while Rasmus Hojlund netted two goals for the home side.

After the game, Paul Scholes and his former team-mate Rio Ferdinand questioned Man United’s defending during the game, with Scholes expressing his concern over the 30-year-old French centre-back.

‘I worry about Varane a bit, he has been one of the very best defenders around, in that same ilk at Real Madrid,’ Scholes said to TNT Sports.

‘I just think his legs are looking sluggish, he can’t keep fit and I worry about him.’

He and Victor Lindelof were caught out of position for Mauro Icardi’s winning goal n the 80th minute of the match.

Davinson Sanchez played a header to the Italian, who found himself in behind both of the defenders, who had advanced to the centre circle.

Breaking away from Varane and his Swedish partner, Icardi ran through to go one-on-one with Andre Onana in net to lift the ball over the goalkeeper to give Galatasaray the victory.

And Scholes criticised both of them, claiming that the pair were ‘were so soft and weak’

The loss comes as United’s second on the bounce after their defeat by Crystal Palace at the weekend

And Scholes admitted that he thought his side had been neglectful of how important it is to defend tonight before slamming United’s centre-backs.

He said: ‘Really disappointed. I actually don’t think they played that badly. All the talk before the game was that they couldn’t really score goals and there was a a lack of goals in the team.

‘It is almost as if we disregarded the defensive side of the game and the defensive side of the team it wasn’t good enough they were wide open at times.’

After acknowledging the goals, he added: The rest of it, the centre halves especially. Amrabat, look he’s not a left-back he gets done for the third goal.

‘But it was so wide open [the defence] Lindelof and Varane were so soft and weak and we all know what the goalkeeper did as well.’
