Mauricio Pochettino reviews Bournemouth
Mauricio Pochettino claims that Chelsea’s owners ‘aren’t disappointed’ with the club’s poor run of form and believe recent performances have been ‘good’. The Blues boss says co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali as well as the sporting directors all share the same vision for the club and are confident their fortunes will turn around sooner rather than later.
Chelsea have got off to their worst start since the 2015/2016 campaign when they took just four points from five matches. This season they have only managed to secure one more point with two draws, two defeats and one win from their opening five fixtures.
Perhaps most worrying is the fact they have only scored five goals in as many games with three of them coming against Premier League new boys Luton Town in their only win of the season. Pochettino admits that their lack of firepower up front is a concern but says that the owners are fully behind his project.
“I speak with Todd, but also Behdad and the sporting directors,” he said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa. “We’re in contact. They’re supporting the project. They’re not disappointed because the performances are good. We share the same idea about that, but we need to score goals to win games.”
£32million signing Nicholas Jackson has struggled in front of goal since joining the Blues this summer from Villareal. He has only managed to find the back of the net once in five appearances and there is a growing concern that he may not be ready to lead Chelsea’s line.
One man, who could be brought into the fold to replace him is Chelsea striker Armando Broja. The 22-year-old recently returned from a long-term injury and built up plenty of Premier League experience playing up front for Southampton on loan two seasons ago.
However, Pochettino insists they cannot expect too much of him after nine months on the sidelines. “It’s the same situation that we can talk about many players,” said Pochettino. “Broja arrives and maybe will be involved at the weekend but it’s after nine months of not competing.
“We cannot put responsibility on him. The responsibility must be on the team and the collective effort. We cannot expect Broja will score with every single touch, he needs to feel the competition.”
