Premier League to bow to Liverpool despite PGMOL ‘split’ over Reds request

Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Liverpool – The Verdict

The Premier League are set to bow to pressure from Liverpool by releasing audio of the VAR decision that cost the Reds a goal at the weekend, despite the fact that referees’ body PGMOL are split over whether the Anfield club should be given the recordings. Liverpool had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside during their clash with Tottenham and went on to lose the match 2-1.

Jurgen Klopp’s side thought they had taken the lead against Spurs as Luis Diaz ran on to a through ball from Mohamed Salah before firing the ball past Guglielmo Vicario. The assistant referee flagged for offside, even though Cristian Romero was clearly playing Diaz onside in the build-up.

Remarkably, when the goal was checked, VAR officials Darren England and Dan Cook mistakenly thought that referee Simon Hooper had decided to allow the goal. And the duo therefore issued ‘check complete’ instructions rather than telling Hooper to award the goal. By the time the officials had realised what they had done, the match had started again and it was too late to do anything about it.

Liverpool were furious with the error and released a statement claiming it “undermined sporting integrity.” The Anfield giants then asked to be handed audio files so they could hear for themselves exactly what had been said by the officials at the time.

According to the Daily Mail, referee chief Howard Webb wants to own the incident but other senior figures disagree. A meeting is due to take place on Tuesday, where the organisation will discuss when to release the audio as a review into the incident is still taking place. And the PGMOL will ultimately give Liverpool the files they want.

The clash in north London had been goalless at the time of Diaz’s strike, with the Reds down to 10 men following the sending off of Curtis Jones. Spurs then took the lead through Son Heung-min, with Cody Gakpo equalising for the visitors in first half stoppage time.

Liverpool tried to hold out for a point after they were reduced to nine men midway through the second half following the dismissal of Diogo Jota. But the hosts grabbed all three points when Joel Matip turned the ball into his own net at the death.

“Liverpool Football Club acknowledges PGMOL’s admission of their failures last night,” read a statement from the Reds on Sunday. “It is clear that the correct application of the laws of the game did not occur, resulting in sporting integrity being undermined.”

And the Anfield club added: “We will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.”
