Rangers legend Jim Forrest, who once scored an incredible 57 goals in one season, has died at the age of 79.

Forrest was the most prolific goalscorer in the Scottish giants' post-war history. A Rangers statement said: "The Rangers family is today saddened by the loss of former striker, Jim Forrest, at the age of 79. The thoughts of everyone at Rangers are with Jim’s family and friends."

Forrest was also a hero at Aberdeen, where he won the Scottish Cup. The Dons posted: "Aberdeen Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Forrest. Jim played 186 times for the club, scoring 62 goals and was part of the side that won the Scottish Cup in 1970."

Forrest grew up supporting Rangers before joining the Ibrox giants as a schoolboy. His goals in the youth ranks triggered interest from south of the border from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.

There was also attention from Germany, but Rangers were always his first choice. He went on to score 145 goals in 163 games for the Gers, including a remarkable 57 in one campaign. He also bagged 39 goals in 38 games in the 1963-64 season – firing Rangers to the Scottish league title.

“Even a group from Germany tried to persuade me to join up over there," he once recalled. “But frankly they never had a chance. How could they? For they were trying to sign a boy who had supported Rangers since he was no taller than an Ibrox turnstile.”

The Scottish international would eventually play in England with Preston North End, but he soon returned to Scotland with Aberdeen, where he also secured legendary status. He also took his scoring boots overseas, playing for San Antonio Thunder in America, as well as having spells in South Africa with Cape Town City and for Hong Kong Rangers.
