Rasmus Hojlund has first Man Utd goal ruled out by VAR by a matter of inches

Rasmus Hojlund thought he had announced himself to Manchester United fans at Old Trafford when he found the net against Brighton – only for VAR rule his strike out due to a matter of inches.

Marcus Rashford had beat his man, but he had taken an extra touch to push the ball towards the byline. As a result, Rashford slightly overran the ball, which went out of play by a couple of inches.

Hojlund hadn't realised – and he turned the ball home before wheeling away in celebration. However, celebrations were quickly dimmed when it became apparent referee Jarred Gillett had ruled the goal out.

"Another seven days of United fans drawing lines coming up," one fan joked. While a second shared: "Everyone knows it’s to do with the perspective. That Hojlund goal should’ve counted!"

"Where’s the technology they use in the World Cup," a third fumed. And another added: "One rule for Japan another rule for us, bring in the 3D VAR it’s needed now more than ever!"

The Red Devils had been 1-0 down at the time of the disallowed strike – with former United star Danny Welbeck coming back to haunt his former side.

Hojlund was making his United debut, after he swapped Atalanta for United over the summer. The Danish striker had picked up a back injury Atalanta pre-season training, delaying his debut under Erik ten Hag.

United fans were able to get their first glimpse of the striker on Saturday, with Hojlund making his return to action for the Danish national side over the international break.

And United fans booed Ten Hag when he decided to hook Hojlund in the second-half for Anthony Martial.
