Ravel Morrison claims he told shocked Cole Palmer about England call-up

Manchester United flop Ravel Morrison has claimed he told Cole Palmer he had been called up to the England squad, and Palmer didn't believe he was telling the truth.

Palmer has been a standout for Chelsea ever since he swapped the Etihad Stadium for Stamford Bridge over the summer. And Palmer came back to haunt his old club on Sunday afternoon as he netted a 90th-minute penalty to level the game with Manchester City.

City and Chelsea played out an all-time Premier League classic, and Palmer earned the Blues a point. Palmer will now swap his Chelsea blue for England white as he links up with the senior squad for the first time.

On his Instagram story, Morrison shared a snap that Palmer had posted – captioning the picture: "Told him he's in the next England squad, he didn't think I was being serious! Congratulations bro, truly deserved!"

Speaking about Palmer, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino said: "'He's still a young kid but it's amazing what he is giving to the team,' the Chelsea head coach explained. I am so happy for him and happy for the team. We needed a player like him."

Palmer joined Ezra Konsa and Rico Lewis as late additions to Gareth Southgate's squad after James Maddison, Callum Wilson and Lewis Dunk all withdrew from the squad because of injury.

England will play Malta on 17 November and North Macedonia on 20 November in qualifiers for next summer's Euro 2024. "The majority of Gareth Southgate's squad are due to report to St George's Park on Monday with further assessments to take place," said an England statement.
