Referee abandons game on 96 minutes as team mistakenly think they’ve won

A non-league game was incredibly abandoned six minutes into added time – with both teams believing a result had been declared.

Buxton were winning 2-1 at Scunthorpe in National League North when a heavy thunderstorm left standing water on the Glanford Park pitch. Given the state of the game, both sides assumed a result had been called.

Buxton posted on X (formerly Twitter): "The referee has blown up early due to the poor weather conditions. WE HAVE PICKED UP ALL THREE POINTS. GET INNNNNNN.” Scunthorpe also thought it was game over, posting: “FULL TIME. The visitors take the three points.”

However, Buxton then added: “The referee has in fact abandoned the game, rather than blown the full-time whistle. As soon as we have further information, we will let you know.”

Scunthorpe said: “We have been informed that the referee has abandoned the game, rather than blown the full-time whistle. As soon as we have further information, we will let you know.”

An abandonment will mean the game will have to be replay in its entirety, leaving Buxton feeling aggrieved. One of their goalscorers, Xander McBurnie, posted: “That was enjoyable!! Typical if they wipe my goal, I don’t score many [laughing face emoji]. Lads were unreal and thanks to the travelling fans.”

Scunthorpe manager Jimmy Dean, who had seen striker Danny Elliott have a penalty saved just before the curtailment of the match, felt it should have been called off earlier.

“It was a crazy finish to the match," he said. "I think the game probably should have been abandoned a little bit earlier than that.

“Danny Elliott couldn’t take his penalty in those conditions, not fairly anyway. The ref’s told me he’s abandoned the game and the precedent, when it’s happened before in the league, is that it’s played again. That’s what we’re hoping will happen.”
