Sebastien Haller has remarkably claimed that missing out on last season’s Bundesliga title was worse than his testicular cancer diagnosis.
Borussia Dortmund looked set to win the German title on the final day of last season, but could only manage a 2-2 draw with Mainz and saw them hand the championship to Bayern Munich on goal difference.
The German side found themselves 2-0 down inside 25 minutes, and although they clawed their way back into the game thanks to Nicolasle 90th minute equaliser, it wasn’t enough and led to a scene of devastatingly disappointed players at the the final whistle.
Haller started that game for Dortmund and admitted in an interview with German outlet Bild, that the faliure to land the title felt worse than when he was told about his illness.

‘It really is true. The missed title hurts me more than the cancer diagnosis at the time.’ The 29-year-old said.
‘If you are sick, there is nothing you can do about it. You have to accept it and move through it. But we had the title in our own hands, we could influence everything ourselves.
In that case you have to painfully accept that you may have made mistakes or wrong decisions.’
Haller joined Borussia Dortmund in July 2022, but just weeks after moving to the club he received the crushing news was that there had been a malignant tumour found in his testicles.

The striker made his return in January, just six months after his diagnosis and was back among the goals when he notched his first goal for the club in a 5-1 win over Freiburg in February.
Since overcoming the illness, Haller has gone onto score 11 goals in 27 appearances for Dortmund.
