Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have contrasting views over Man Utd takeover

Cristiano Ronaldo 'frustrated' Man Utd squad as Mike Phelan lifts lid on 'opinionated' star

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have differing views over whether the Glazer family actually want to sell Manchester United, according to reports. Both parties have been in the running to buy the club since last November but have been left frustrated by a lack of concrete movement either way.

Sheikh Jassim has been leading a Qatari delegation bidding to take full control of United from their current owners, while Ratcliffe has been fronting a proposal to buy a 50 per cent stake in the club. The latter would also be willing to allow the Glazers to retain a minority share of United, but they would have no ownership whatsoever under Sheikh Jassim’s proposal.

There is currently no end in sight to United’s takeover process, with the Glazers still mulling over the situation despite announcing their intention to sell nearly a year ago. Sheikh Jassim and his associates are now ‘unsure’ if the American family are genuinely willing to sell the club, according to The Guardian.

The Qatari royal is reportedly still eager to buy United but knows that he will need to play ‘the long game’ with the Glazers to stand any chance of getting a deal done. Ratcliffe, meanwhile, is thought to be optimistic that United’s current owners are ‘intent on selling’ in spite of the ongoing delays.

Neither party is said to have put a timeframe on negotiations, which suggests that it could still be a while before an agreement is reached or the club is taken off the market by the Glazers. It was recently claimed by the Daily Mail that a sale could be put on hold until 2025, when increased television rights revenues and the expansion of the Club World Cup could make United more valuable.

It remains to be seen how things will develop over the next few months, with the Glazers still yet to indicate their preferred bidder out of Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe. United legend Gary Neville has been among those to publicly criticise the Glazers for keeping fans in the dark, while he also warned back in June that a sale might not end up coming to fruition.

“What you want from leaders is good, clear communication,” he told The Guardian. “The Glazer family do the exact opposite. They’re in a position of authority, looking after a community, and United’s fans around the world are a global community.

“The Glazers haven’t communicated with them for nearly 20 years. The sale process is extending to an unpalatable length, everyone’s in the dark, and it’s symptomatic. They have to exit but I haven’t got faith that they’ll do the right thing.”
