Sheikh Jassim may buy Man Utd in two months after claims sale ‘delayed’

LGBTQ+ activist concerned by potential Qatari takeover of Man Utd

Manchester United’s takeover saga continues to rumble on, 10 months after their Glazer family owners put the club up for sale. Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe are battling to buy the Red Devils and have both put forward a series of offers. And Express Sport looks at the latest takeover developments.

Sale delayed until 2025

At the weekend, the Mail on Sunday claimed the Glazers were planning on taking the club off the market after failing to get close to their anticipated asking price. Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe are both thought to have bid in the region of £6billion for United. But, incredibly, the report said the current owners would demand between £7bn and £10bn by going after a sale again in 2025.

By that time, the Glazers were said to be factoring in a higher price due to an uplift in TV rights revenues, the expansion of the Club World Cup to 32 teams in 2025 and the forthcoming World Cup in 2026. USA are one of three host countries for the next World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, and the tournament could ignite interest in United from American billionaires.

The Glazer family have faced protests for their refusal to accept an offer. But a source told the publication: “The Glazers are thick-skinned and won’t be influenced by any negative fan reactions.”

Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe given November deadline

While Sunday’s report proved to be a blow for Red Devils fans, who want the club to change hands as quickly as possible, there was good news for them on Monday afternoon as 90mins reported that United and the firm in charge of their sale, Raine Group, had planned on everything being finalised by November.

The Glazer family have, however, taken particular note of the fact that NFL team Washington Commanders were sold for £4.8bn in July. The figure convinced the Glazers that they should be getting much more than £6bn for United and see the club as comparable with Dallas Cowboys, who were valued at £7.7bn by Forbes magazine.

The bidders are still interested

The Glazers’ dawdling hasn’t put Sheikh Jassim or Ratcliffe off buying the Red Devils, according to Sky Sports and the bidders are still interested in completing a takeover.

The outlet have explained that stories of the sale being off is just a tactic to make Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe put more money on the table to secure a deal. And the duo believe the club is still up for sale.
