Southend United have been deducted ten points by the National League and the High Court have given them a 42-day deadline to avoid being wound up.
The Shrimpers have an outstanding £275,000 debt owed to HM Revenue and Customs and have previously been given two extensions to pay.
Club owner Ron Martin said that he was hoping to finalise the sale of the fifth tier side to an Australian buyer next month.
The Shrimpers were told prior to the season that they would be deducted points if the bill was not paid.
Southend have started the season with two wins and two losses, gaining six points in their opening four fixtures and sitting ninth in the table. Their deduction will move them onto minus four points.

Blues also remain under a transfer embargo and can only register 16 players until such restrictions are taken away.
They were previously given a 42-day adjournment on July 12 and a 56-day delay on May 17.
Over 25 years under Ron Martin’s ownership, the club have faced 18 winding-up petitions.
He announced in March that the club was up for sale but no deal has been finalised yet and said he was willing to sell his stake in them for just £1.
They dropped out of the Football League for the first time in 100 years in 2021 and have since gone on to record 13th and eight-placed finishes.
