Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has responded to rumours that his Al-Ettifaq side are keen to sign Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood.
Manchester United news, exclusives and analysis
Gerrard took charge of the Saudi Pro League club last month and they are one of a number of teams linked with a move for Greenwood.
It was confirmed on Monday that Greenwood will leave Old Trafford following the club’s internal investigation into his actions.
The 21-year-old has been suspended by United since January 2022 after he was arrested and subsequently charged by Manchester Police with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.
All charges against Greenwood were dropped in February but United decided to conduct their own probe and after both the club and player announced that he would depart, CEO Richard Arnold penned an open letter to fans over the issue.
It is likely that the Englishman will join a club overseas and The Sun had reported that Gerrard wants to recruit Greenwood at his Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq.
But Gerrard has rejected those claims as he posted the Daily Mail’s version of the story on his Instagram story with ‘FAKE NEWS’ over the article in capital letters.
It is thought that there are clubs in Italy, Turkey and elsewhere are keen on a move for Greenwood.
Reports suggest that former Chelsea, United and Tottenham Jose Mourinho is an ‘admirer’ of the player and wants to bring him to Roma.
Meanwhile, Gary Neville has slammed the United hierarchy for their ‘pretty horrible’ decision process over Greenwood’s future.
