Manchester United’s pursuit of Harry Kane was reportedly vetoed by club chiefs for being ‘too expensive’.
Amid the latest summer of speculation over the England captain’s future, United were the English side that looked most likely to sign Kane, who had just a year remaining on his Tottenham contract, although there were big doubts over whether Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would sanction a transfer to an English rival.
There were calls within the club to at least test the water with a bid before Kane eventually sealed a move to Bayern Munich, who host United in the Champions League tonight. According to The Athletic, club scouts pushed back against a move for Kane, who was said to be seeking £30million a year, on top of a £100million transfer fee.

There was also said to be reluctance from the club hierarchy, with co-owner Joel Glazer and chief executive Richard Arnold deciding a move for Kane, who was entering his 30s, was not a wise use of funds.
One man who is believed to have thought differently is Erik ten Hag, who wanted Kane, although he accepted the club’s decision. Instead, United signed Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £70million.

Kane addressed the speculation over his future ahead of tonight’s game, saying he was aware of domestic interest in him. He said: “Obviously over the summer I know there were some talks between a few clubs in the background, but Bayern were a team I was really interested and excited by.
“There were not too many other discussions once they came in. It was between them and Tottenham to talk and then the deal got done.
“My focus is on here. Manchester United are a great club, a really big club as well. I just decided to come here and am really happy I have.”
Kane has scored four Bundesliga goals for Bayern, including in the 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday night. He added: “Being here now, I am just enjoying the new surroundings. I have been back and forth with the internationals and the birth of my fourth child.
“I still don’t feel I have fully settled in to everything yet, that will take a bit more time, but over the course of the season I will get to know more about the club and speak to the big names who have played here before.”
