Micky van de Ven wants to ‘prove people wrong’ at Spurs
Tottenham favourite Micky van de Ven has named Marcus Rashford as the toughest rival he has faced since moving to north London in the summer, despite the fact the England international failed to score when Manchester United faced Spurs in August. Van de Ven has been a key player for Tottenham this season and is yet to miss a minute of Premier League action.
Tottenham shelled out an initial £34million to prise Van de Ven away from Germany. And the centre-back has nailed down a regular starting place alongside Cristian Romero in the Spurs backline.
Van de Ven’s form helped Spurs storm to the top of the Premier League table after 10 games, with his team winning eight matches and drawing the other two. And the Netherlands international came up against Rashford in his second match for his current employers as Spurs cruised to a 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Rashford has endured a miserable spell of form this season and returned just one goal and one assist in his first 10 Premier League matches of the campaign. The attacker has been heavily criticised by some pundits and was also told off by his boss Erik ten Hag after partying in Manchester in the aftermath of the Red Devils’ defeat to Manchester City last weekend. But Van de Ven has insisted the forward is top drawer.

“The home game against United, Rashford for me, he’s a top player,” the 22-year-old told Sky Sports when asked who his toughest opponent had been so far. “Of course, Man United aren’t doing that well in the league, they’re in a tough period now.
“But if you see the quality of Rashford – of course it’s really difficult to play in a team that isn’t going really well – but Rashford for me when I played against him, every second of the game he can do this and he can make a goal. And he’s so strong with the ball, without the ball. For me he’s a top-class player.”

Meanwhile, Van de Ven has admitted the player he was most excited about playing against when he initially signed for Tottenham was Citizens striker Erling Haaland.
“I would say Haaland because I think now he is the best striker in the world,” the defender added. “You want to play against the best, you want to see your level against the best so I think it is a good challenge for me to play against Haaland.”
