VAR ref ‘will not officiate Liverpool again this season’ as PGMOL make sack call

A strong decision has been made regarding Darren England's officiating of Liverpool games – but he won't be losing his job.

England was the VAR during Liverpool's defeat against Tottenham and at fault for failing to overturn an incorrect offside decision which cost Luis Diaz an opening goal – before the hosts went on to win 2-1. Jurgen Klopp has since called for the game to be replayed after the award audio was released by the PGMOL.

England will not be losing his job due to the incident that took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, which came days after he officiated in the UAE, a process which is now under review.

The Telegraph have now reported that England will not be involved in any further Liverpool games for the entirety of the current Premier League season. The update comes after both England and Cook were removed from selection from this weekend’s fixtures.

The 37-year-old was added to the 2022 FIFA List of International Match Officials back in December of 2021, having previously worked in the Football League.

The report adds that England has lost match fees in the region of £1,200 following the incident – on top of a FIFA basic salary of around £150,000.

England and Cook incorrectly signalled 'check complete' after seeing that Diaz was well onside after missing that the linesman had raised his flag.

The bombshell audio shows how the mistake was made, with ref Hooper thanking their involvement before the chaos began.

Hooper can be heard saying on the audio: "Well done boys, good process." The replay operator then calls for the VAR duo to pause the fixture – as they insist they cannot do so due to the rules of VAR.

Spotting the comment, although Hooper wasn't to blame for the mistake while trusting his colleagues, a fan said: "Beyond a shambles."

A second added: "The comms is all over the place, it’s not clear enough and can imagine if the ref is hearing all that, he’d be all over the place."

A third posted: "Not the ref’s fault though. He’s reliant on VAR getting it right." A fourth said: "This is insane."
