Referee Darren England’s LinkedIn page has circulated on social media after fans noticed his bio described himself as ‘reliable’ with ‘excellent communication skills’ – despite being involved in the VAR chaos that saw Luis Diaz’s goal against Tottenham disallowed.
The fallout from Liverpool’s controversial 2-1 loss at Tottenham has continued this week, with the club unsuccessfully appealing against Curtis Jones’ red card and also making a formal request to receive the audio file from the VAR decision makers on the day.
Diaz’s goal was wrongly chalked off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the audio clip has since showed VAR official England and assistant Dan Cook failing to realise that on-field Simon Hooper had not awarded the goal – despite acknowledging that the Colombian was in fact onside.
The VAR operator is heard to say after play wrongly restarted, ‘Wait, wait, wait, wait, the on-field decision was ‘offside’, are you happy with this? That’s wrong that, Daz (Darren England, VAR)’, to which England sighs and swears, shouting ‘Oh f***’.
Now England’s LinkedIn page has emerged with the official’s description of himself quickly pounced on by supporters who urged him to change his bio after taking issue with some of the attributes he highlighted.

His bio reads: ‘I am a reliable, focused and driven individual. I set myself high personal and professional standards and expect the same from those I work with.
‘I am exceptionally conscientious and methodical but I have learnt to adapt my approach when faced with the unexpected, finding “out of the box” solutions when appropriate.
‘I work well as part of a team and have excellent communication skills that I have used effectively to engage, support and motivate others.’
One fan picked out a few lines and wrote: ‘Darren England’s profile on LinkedIn reads like a parody.’
Another said: ‘Just wow’, while one supporter added: ‘Darren England needs to update his LinkedIn profile.’
‘Darren England’s LinkedIn bio couldn’t be further from the truth,’ another said.
The PGMOL have come under increasing pressure over the VAR fiasco and admitted their standards ‘fell short of expectations’
Both England and Cook have been dropped from this weekend’s fixture list following their mistake, while referee Simon Hooper will act as VAR for Everton versus Bournemouth on Saturday.
The PGMOL said in a statement that ‘standards fell short of expectations’ during the highly-contentious clash in north London and it has identified three key areas ‘to mitigate against the risk of a future error’.
A Premier League spokesperson on Tuesday night added: ‘It is clear that there were not only human errors but systemic weaknesses in the VAR process. We accept PGMOL’s immediate recommendations to ensure that such failures are not repeated in the future.
‘However, a wider review to seek consistently higher standards of VAR performance will be conducted by the Premier League and PGMOL and where necessary further recommended actions will be brought forward and implemented.’
