Liverpool take on Manchester City on Saturday in a crucial Premier League tie that could see the Reds end the weekend at the top of the table providing they secure all three points. Jurgen Klopp has one of the best records against Pep Guardiola’s City side but it hasn’t always gone to plan. Back in September 2017, Liverpool were trashed 5-0 at the Etihad as Sadio Mane was given his marching orders for a high boot on Ederson. Here, Express Sport takes a look at where those Liverpool players are today.
Simon Mignolet
Between the sticks on that fateful night was Simon Mignolet. Despite conceding five goals it was hardly his fault. The Belgian was hung out to dry by some hapless defending and even made some decent saves during the game to ensure the scoreline didn’t reach double digits. Nowadays, he plys his trade in his homeland of Belgium for Club Brugge where he has been since 2019 after being ousted from Liverpool’s starting XI by Allison Becker.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of only three players that are still in Liverpool’s squad today. The Englishman has gone on to have much better performances than he did back in September 2017 and is now a staple of Jurgen Klopp’s side in 2023.
Joel Matip
Joel Matip is also still a Liverpool player but for how much longer is unclear. The German centre-back has visibly slowed down over the last couple of seasons and has been linked with a move away from Anfield in the January transfer window. His contract with the Reds expires next summer.
Ragnar Klavan
Lining up next to Matip was Ragnar Klavan, who is somewhat of a cult hero in Liverpool. During a brief two-year spell with the Reds, he did everything asked of him and worked his socks off for the badge. But in the end, Klopp’s system evolved and he was eventually sold to Serie A side Caligari in 2018. After three years spent mostly on the sidelines in Italy, Klavan returned to his native Estonia to play for Paide Linnameeskond and then JK Tallinna Kalev where he is both a player and club president today.
Alberto Moreno
Alberto Moreno came to Liverpool as one of the most promising young left-backs in the world but has so far failed to live up to his lofty expectations. Now 31 years old, Moreno sits on the bench for Villareal.
Jordan Henderson
After an impressive 12-year stint with Liverpool, Jordan Henderson joined the exodus of former Premier League players signing lucrative deals in Saudi Arabia. The Englishman now earns a reported eye-watering £700,000 a week playing for Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq.

Georginio Wijnaldum
Georginio Wijnaldum had an absolute stinker on the night but will be remembered fondly by Liverpool fans for his time in Merseyside’s red. The Dutchman scored two goals during Liverpool’s stunning 4-3 comeback against Barcelona in the 2019 Champions League semi-final and rarely put a foot wrong during his time at the club. In 2023, he reunited with Henderson at Al-Ettifaq after two years at PSG broken up by a loan spell with AS Roma.
Emre Can
Emre Can has gone on to have a decent career since leaving Liverpool in 2020. The German midfielder is a regular for Die Mannschaft and recently succeeded Marco Reus as team captain at Borussia Dortmund where he has played for the last three years.
Mohamed Salah
Completing the trio of players still at Liverpool is Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian superstar remains one of the Reds’ most important players to this day. Liverpool turned down a £150million bid from Al-Ittihad for him in the summer which goes to show how crucial he is to Klopp’s side.
Roberto Firmino
Roberto Firmino is yet another former Liverpool star lavishing in the Saudi Pro League. He signed a three-year contract with Al-Ahli in June that will see him bag £17m a season.
Sadio Mane
It is the same story for Mane, who plays alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr. He joined the Saudi outfit after a tumultuous season with Bayern Munich that saw him get banned and fined for punching team-mate Leroy Sane during a dressing room bust-up after the Bavarian giants’ 3–0 Champions League quarter-final loss to Manchester City.
Substitutes
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – Signed for Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas over the summer after a career at Liverpool marred by injuries.
James Milner – Joined Brighton in June on a free transfer. Has struggled for fitness this season.
Dominic Solanke – Carved out a decent career for himself at Bournemouth where he is the starting striker.
The 23/24 home shirt for Liverpool pays homage to the past of the club, as well as collaborator Nike, with a strong 1970s influence. The iconic red, capped with bold white cuffs and collar really does invoke that classic Liverpool FC style while adding a cool retro touch
