Eugenie Bouchard joins Serena Williams in taking a dig at Simona Halep

Eugenie Bouchard joins Serena Williams in taking a shot at Simona Halep following the Romanian’s four-year doping suspension as the Canadian star sends cryptic jab on social media

  • Serena Williams was quick to post a jibe of her own on social media on Tuesday
  • Eugenie Bouchard has previously spoken out against rivals found guilt of doping
  • Simona Halep claimed she was ‘shocked and disappointed’ at the announcement

Eugenie Bouchard has been quick to join Serena Williams in taking a dig at Simona Halep on social media.

The Romanian two-time Grand Slam champion was suspended for four years after an anti-doping violation, after being found with the forbidden roxadustat, a drug to treat anaemia, in her system.

The former world No 1 has since appealed the decision and continues to plead her innocence, and claimed that she herself was ‘shocked’ with the announcement.

However, her former rivals have been quick to speak out against the adverse findings, with Williams taking to social media on Tuesday evening, before Bouchard followed suit a day later.

Bouchard has took to X to post a cryptic message of her own, writing: ‘I was told not to tweet today,’ followed by an emoji covering their mouth.

The Canadian 2014 Wimbledon finalist has often been quick to voice her opinions, and even has previous experience in commenting on her opponents who have suffered similar drug bans.

Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova had been banned in 2016, before a defeat to Bouchard a year later.

The 29-year-old then openly labelled her more famous counterpart a ‘cheater’, claiming it was ‘unfair’ that Sharapova was allowed to return to the sport.

‘She is a cheater and so, to me, I don’t think a cheater in any sport should be allowed to play that sport again,’ she said.

‘It’s so unfair to all the other players who do it the right way.’

Williams was quick to take a dig at her rival on Tuesday, with the 23-time Grand Slam winner posting: ‘8 is a better number’.

Halep defeated the American great at Wimbledon to lift her second Grand Slam title in 2019, denying Williams an eighth championship, which perhaps explains the post.
