Federer ex-coach’s immediate feelings towards Becker shared after Rune link-up

Holger Rune’s mum has opened up on the new working relationship between Severin Luthi and Boris Becker after the pair joined forces to coach her son. The world No 8 hired Becker in October and, on Wednesday, he announced that he was adding Roger Federer’s long-time coach to his camp. According to Aneke Rune, the new team had an instant spark and both men will now be sharing duties throughout the season.

Rune has created a super-team, bringing Luthi into his camp after hiring Becker two months ago. The Swiss tennis coach spent 15 years working with Federer until the 20-time Grand Slam champion retired. Becker, a six-time Major winner himself, also mentored world No 1 Novak Djokovic from late 2013 to late 2016.

Having the backing of two coaches who guided two of the sport’s greatest champions should be a winning recipe. But Luthi and Becker have coached against each other before, with Federer and Djokovic meeting on 14 different occasions when they were both at the helm. However, Rune’s mother and manager Aneke clarified that both men instantly hit it off after a training block in Monaco.

“After the test weeks in Monaco in the pre-season, where both Boris and Severin were at the training sessions, it was very clear that there was really good energy both between Holger and Severin, but also between Boris and Severin,” Aneke told Ekstra Bladet.

Rune’s mum is a regular fixture in her son’s box and is also a member of his team as his manager. She explained that they decided to hire Luthi to share duties with Becker, as the 20-year-old’s intense schedule meant that he would likely be travelling 35 to 40 weeks of the year.

Aneke continued: “With both Boris and Severin, we ensure high quality in all tournament weeks, and that the coaches stay fresh and are inspired to help Holger as best as possible.” She also explained that it would be Luthi who took charge during the upcoming Australian Open.

The former coaches of Federer and Djokovic are expected to vary their schedules so they have tournaments where they both join Rune and other weeks where they travel individually with him. Landing the two big-name mentors has already given the four-time title winner some extra confidence going into the 2024 season.

“It’s a huge boost to Holger. I know they are both very critical in relation to who they want to work with, and they both see great development potential in Holger,” Aneke added. Rune will be starting his season at the Brisbane International – where he is the top seed – before heading to the Australian Open.
