Gauff shares place for £2.4m US Open payday as teen shuts down ‘debt’ question

Coco Gauff said she would be paying her “bills” after picking up a £2.4 million ($3 million) prize money cheque for winning the US Open. The teenager lifted her maiden Grand Slam trophy on Saturday night following an epic comeback victory over Aryna Sabalenka. And the world No 6 quickly shut down a question from a follower who asked if she had debts to pay off.

Gauff won the biggest title of her career on home soil as she downed the new world No 1 2-6 6-3 6-2 in a thrilling final. As well as lifting her first Major trophy, the sixth seed also took home £2.4m and paid a quick tribute to Billie Jean King for pushing for equal prize money. “Thank you Billie for fighting for this,” the 19-year-old smiled as she received the cheque.

The morning after her monumental achievement, Gauff took to Instagram Live to chat with her fans and followers, answering some questions. And one of the big ones involved her prize money and how she would be spending it – as well as a bizarre comment about being in debt.

“Girl, bills,” Gauff laughed when she shared her plans to spend the money. “Nah, I’m just kidding. Bills really though to be honest, I’ve gotta pay my coaches because they deserve a good payday so I’ll pay my coaches.”

Since her triumph in Saturday night’s final, Gauff had been sharing her hopes of eating a burger during all of her post-match interviews. And the teenager still had food on her mind the morning after as she said that was the only thing she could think of spending her winnings on.

She continued: “I don’t know, there’s nothing crazy or materialistic that I want. I’m really satisfied with all that I have so I don’t want anything crazy. But I just want a burger, that’s all I want. I have not eaten literally a full meal since yesterday before my match.”

It goes against Gauff’s original big plans for her first Grand Slam title, as she always expected to treat herself. But she also floated the idea of going on holiday. “I always said when I would win my first Grand Slam I would do a crazy purchase but I don’t really have anything that I really want to buy so yeah,” she added.

“Somebody said take a vacation, I do want to go on a trip. I’ve never had a real vacation to be honest, everytime I’ve left the country it’s always been for work so I’ve never had a real trip. Unless you count DisneyWorld, we went for a weekend but I live in Florida so we drove there and came back home that night.”

During Gauff’s livestream, someone also asked whether she was in debt. And she was very quick to shut the suggestion down. “I’m 19, I don’t have any debt. I’m not in debt,” she laughed.

“I live with my parents still so I’m not in debt, I didn’t go to college so I don’t have any student bills to pay. I’m not in debt, I’m too young. My parents never put me in that position to be in debt so I have nothing to pay right now.”
