Mirra Andreeva rejected Andy Murray offer before US Open as Russian still scared

Mirra Andreeva has revealed that she turned down the chance to speak to her idol Andy Murray ahead of the US Open. The 16-year-old Russian previously called the world No 37 “beautiful” but admitted she was too scared to chat with him at Wimbledon recently. And Andreeva still isn’t ready for a meeting with the former world No 1.

Andreeva is hoping for another strong showing at a Grand Slam tournament this fortnight after statement performances at the French Open and Wimbledon. The teenager reached the third round in Paris and the second week at SW19 where she stole attention with her love for Andy Murray.

The world No 63’s admiration for the Brit goes back to her breakout tournament at the Madrid Open back in April as she appeared on Tennis Channel on her 16th birthday, claiming Murray was “beautiful”. The three-time Major champion responded on Twitter, claiming she needed to get her eyes checked.

But Andreeva has been too shy to have a proper chat with her hero, confirming that she still hadn’t faced her fears ahead of the US Open. “I’ve not had enough courage to speak with Andy Murray yet,” she said, per Sky Sports.

The Russian revealed that her agents had even tried to arrange a chat with the former world No 1 but she still rejected the offer. Andreeva added: “My agency were asking me if I would maybe like to speak to him, to have a small chat for about five minutes, but I said no.

“I’m not ready, I will forget how to speak. I will speak to him maybe in one year, if he is still playing.” At Wimbledon, Andreeva toyed with the idea of speaking with Murray in New York as she wondered whether she would be ready to face him – but it turns out she still couldn’t manage it.

“Now I guess I will not see him here, but maybe in US Open. If I see him, maybe [I’ll speak to him]. It depends,” the world No 63 said after crashing out in the fourth round. “We will see. But for now, I don’t think I will be ready. Maybe in a couple of months I will be ready to say hello.”

While Andreeva still hasn’t found the courage to speak to Murray, she has become acquainted with another tennis star in Coco Gauff. The Russian faced the world No 6 in the third round of the French Open earlier this year and the pair will do battle once again, this time in the second round of the US Open.

And the 16-year-old isn’t scared of facing Gauff again, even if she’s still too shy to speak to Murray. “I’m pretty excited about this match. I will be super excited to play on Arthur Ashe and I will try to do my best and get my revenge for Roland Garros,” she said.
