Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in disagreement as Serb refuses to go into it

Novak Djokovic says he will 'keep going' after US Open win

Novak Djokovic has admitted that he disagrees with Rafa Nadal’s comment that the Serb “feels more intensely” about winning more Grand Slam titles than his rivals. Djokovic overtook Nadal this year as his Australian Open, French Open and US Open victories put him at 24 Major victories – two clear of Nadal in second place.

Though Nadal can still catch Djokovic as he prepares to return from a long-term injury in the 2024 season, it is unlikely and the Spanish icon claimed that he was not upset by losing the historic accolade to Djokovic – as it means more to the 36-year-old.

“I’m not frustrated for a simple reason – within my possibilities, I’ve done all I can to make things happen for me,” Nadal told Spanish TV station Movistar+. “I think Novak feels more intensely [about] this than I do.

“Had he not achieved it, it may have been a bigger frustration for him. Maybe that is why he did it. I think he has had the ability to take ambition to the maximum. I think I’ve been ambitious too but a bit healthier, which allowed me to see things in a different way.”

Djokovic, however, was in disagreement with the notion that not becoming the record holder for most Grand Slam men’s singles titles would frustrate him more than Nadal – while also curiously admitting that he does have “some negative opinions” about Nadal and Roger Federer.

“I’ve seen that his comments went viral, that many people spoke about it,” Djokovic told Sportal. “Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, how he interprets someone else in a certain context etc. That’s all I can say. Rafa is a great champion and I respect and appreciate him as such – as a great champion, my biggest rival and as a player who contributed to shaping my game and to results I’ve accomplished.

He added: “I have no intention of speaking in a negative light about him or Roger Federer – my respect towards them supersedes some negative opinions I might have. Again, that’s Rafa’s opinion and I, of course, don’t agree. I have my opinion, but I won’t share it as I don’t want us to go deeper into that. There is no need for that.”

Djokovic has the chance to face Nadal once again at the Australian Open. The tournament’s chief Craig Tiley has confirmed that the two-time champion will make his return from injury down under.

“We can reveal exclusively here that Rafa will be back,” Tiley said. “He’s been off for most of the year and in talking to him over the last few days he confirmed he will be back, which we’re really excited about, the champion of 2022. That’s awesome.”
