Novak Djokovic’s beneficial route to US Open final as Alcaraz showdown looms

Novak Djokovic has learned his draw at the US Open as he prepares to play the tournament for the first time since 2021. And the world No 2 has a favourable route through to the quarter-finals, where things could get tough. With Carlos Alcaraz heading the draw as the top seed, both men are on a collision course to meet in the final.

Djokovic is back at the US Open for the first time since he lost in the final two years ago. The Serb had been unable to travel to America due to the Covid vaccine requirements but he made a comeback in Cincinnati last week, beating Alcaraz in a thrilling final.

The pair are on for a rematch just weeks later as they are on opposite halves of the draw and could have a date in the championship match on Sunday, September 10. But both men need to get there first and the 36-year-old has a beneficial route through.

Djokovic starts his campaign against world No 85 Alexandre Muller, with either Bernabe Zapata Miralles or American wildcard Ethan Quinn awaiting in the second round. Laslo Djere is the first seed Djokovic could meet at the tournament, with the fellow Serb just getting a spot as the 32nd seed and serving as a potential third-round opponent.

Djokovic could face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the fourth round, though the world No 15 has been struggling for form and lost five of his last six matches. Francisco Cerundolo is also a potential round-of-16 opponent before things ramp up in the quarter-final where the 23-time Grand Slam champion could face top 10 stars Stefanos Tsitsipas or Taylor Fritz.

Last year’s runner-up Casper Ruud is in the Serb’s half of the draw, meaning he is a potential semi-final opponent. And fourth seed Holger Rune – who upset Djokovic in last year’s Paris Masters final – could also face the world No 2 in the semi-final. As well as Alcaraz in the opposite half, the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev could be other potential opponents in the final.
