Tiger Woods angers Scottish locals as thousands sign petition to stop redevel…

Tiger Woods’ plans to build a sports-themed bar just minutes from the world-famous St Andrews Old Course have hit a roadblock with a petition opposing the development reaching 10,000 signatures. Woods has a close affinity to St Andrews having won The Open in Fifa back in 2000 and 2005.

And the American sports icon announced plans to open a new sports bar near the Old Course last month. The 47-year-old said: “I have been fortunate enough to enjoy many special moments here at St Andrews.

“We all wanted to bring our T-Squared Social concept to St Andrews to add to the local community and be a welcoming place for those living in St Andrews and for visitors alike.

The plans are for the sports bar to open in 2024 at the town’s New Picture House, featuring state-of-the-art golf simulators, bowling, darts and multiple televisions dotted around the place. Woods stated how he hoped the sports bar would help add something to the local community.

However, not everyone is happy about the prospect of Woods launching his new venture in their town. St Andrews University student Ash Johann Curry-Machado launched a petition soon after the announcement pleading for the “preservation of the New Picture House”.

The cinema is described as the “heart and soul of St Andrews” and the petition labels the proposed transformation as “deeply alarming”. And the petition has proven popular among the local community with more than 10,000 signatures.

It was confirmed that an email had been sent to local MP Wendy Chamberlain to try and have the proposals overturned. St Andrews Community Council member Neil Dobson also took aim at Woods for not taking the locals into consideration.

“I find this very disrespectful and a bit cheeky, to be honest,” he told The Courier. “This town has been very good to Tiger Woods and this is not the way to repay residents.

“St Andrews is unique and that building is iconic. An American bar is completely out of keeping. It will be full of American golfers with nothing left in the town for children at all.”
