Luke Donald says the purity of the Ryder Cup will lift it above all the bitterness and rage that has divided golf in the past two years.

With the professional game mired in uncertainty following the merger between the traditional tours and the Saudi backers of the LIV circuit, the Cup clash in Rome next week is being viewed as an interlude to the political soap opera.

Some would say the Cup’s arrival is timely at a point when the sport’s image has been scarred by the self-interest and greed on show during the civil war created by the arrival of LIV.

Donald, whose European side go into the match as underdogs to the Americans, said: ‘I think the Ryder Cups has always been bigger (than) stuff like that.

‘It certainly has nothing to do with personal interests. I mean, it’s the complete opposite.
