Legendary jockey AP McCoy had to fight back tears as he provided an emotional update on Graham Lee's injury.
Lee fell from his horse while racing in Newcastle last week and was taken to intensive care where he underwent surgery. While discussing his condition during a live ITV broadcast, McCoy began welling up when talking about the "long road" to recovery facing the Irishman. "It's been the most horrendous week," he said, as his voice began to quiver.
"One little positive thing would be that Ritchie McGrath and his wife Becky FaceTimed me with Graham last night… but when I say the most horrendous week I really mean that.

"He had an operation to stabilise his fractures on Wednesday," McCoy added. "There is a lot of swelling and bruising around the spinal chord – it's going to be a long road, you know."
Noticing that the Northern Irishman was too upset to continue, fellow pundit Ruby Walsh stepped in to give McCoy a chance to collect himself. "It is a long road," he said, "and it'll be a long road for Becky and the family. We never know in the world where things can go, and what medicine is bringing us. With a bit of luck God can be good, and I think everyone would like him to be good right now."

Fans on social media praised McCoy's response and the emotion he showed, but also commended Walsh's empathetic quick-thinking. One person wrote on X: "Pure class from Ruby Walsh. Can see AP is struggling and steps in so he can take a moment. My thoughts are with Graham Lee, his family & his friends."
Another said: "The terrible incident has almost broke the hardest sportsman of all time. I’ve never seen AP McCoy so emotional. Thoughts and prayers to everyone affected." A third added: "I think I speak for the whole racing community when I say we feel AP McCoy's emotions, and we stand with him, Graham and Graham's family, during this difficult time. The Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) revealed on Friday that Lee had made "positive progress" and was ready to move to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, closer to his home. Galway-born Lee rode more than 1,000 winners over the jumps, including Amberleigh House for trainer Ginger McCain in the 2004 Grand National. He switched to riding on the Flat in 2012 and won the Gold Cup at Ascot three years later with Trip To Paris.
