Lewis Hamilton has accepted blame for the incident between himself and McLaren driver Oscar Piastri at the Italian Grand Prix, confirming that he has apologised to the young Aussie.
The two drivers were going wheel-to-wheel during the middle part of the Italian Grand Prix with Hamilton setting up a move at the Variante della Roggia chicane by lining up the switchback at the Rettifilo chicane at the start of the lap.
Hamilton got the better drive out of the Curva Grande, granting him the superior inside line into the critical Variante della Roggia corner complex.
However, instead of planting his car down the centre of the track, the seven-time world champion wandered over to the right and squeezed Piastri towards the wall, leading to contact between the two drivers.

The legendary Briton was handed a five-second time penalty for the incident, although this did nothing to his eventual finishing position. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 reporters about his race and the incident, Hamilton explained: “I think every position we are getting in these races is seeming to be incredibly hard and fought for.
“Starting on the hard tyre today, it was nice to be offset but it was difficult at the beginning. I enjoyed the battle I had at the end.
“It was a bit unfortunate and I misjudged the gap I had with Piastri right at the end. It was totally my fault and I went and apologised to him straight afterwards and we move on.”

This was one of three major incidents for the young Australian, who endured a difficult first outing to Monza in F1 equipment. Piastri threw away a points finish after the clash with Hamilton before receiving a time penalty of his own following an incident with AlphaTauri stand-in Liam Lawson.
Speaking about his afternoon, the 22-year-old said: “The incident with Lewis, he probably just creeped over a bit more than he thought. The stewards gave out their verdict and he has apologised so there is nothing more I can ask for or do at that point.
“The one with Liam Lawson, I was having very terrible afternoon by that point and was quicker so tried to go around the outside a couple of times and it is what it is.”
