Alan Shearer ‘wasn’t the brightest’ says ex-team-mate after comical animal gaffe

Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer was "an unbelievable talent" but "wasn’t the brightest", a former team-mate has claimed.

Ex-Blackburn and Aston Villa defender Alan Wright, known as "the mighty atom" for being one of the shortest players in English football history, was speaking on the I Had Trials Once podcast. Wright said: "Alan Shearer was a great guy, but he wasn’t the brightest.

"He was sponsored by Jaguar cars and he came in one day at Blackburn and said: 'Someone’s broken the lion off the front of my car!' I asked him who he was sponsored by and he said, 'Jaguar', so then I asked him what they’d broken off his car, and he said, 'the f***ing lion!' He didn’t have a clue!

"But he was ruthless in training and he was aggressive. He was an unbelievable finisher as well. It seemed like he would just hit the ball as hard as he could, but he’d never miss the target. He was an unbelievable talent and his goal record speaks for itself."

Wright, who stands at only 5ft4in, also said ex-Villa team-mate Dwight Yorke had "a ridiculous amount of skill". He said: "He used to stand in a small, square bin in the dressing room and any time a new player came in he would bet them £100 that he could do 50 keep-ups with his head without falling out of the bin.

"Obviously everyone took the bet because it seems impossible – but I never saw him fail to do it." Wright also praised former Blackburn manager Kenny Dalglish as "so good" at passing on his knowledge of the game.

Shearer more than made up for an apparent lack of book-smarts with his world class on-field intelligence. The Newcastle and Blackburn legend scored over 400 career goals, with a record 260 coming in the Premier League.

Wright, meanwhile, spent the largest chunk of his 23-year career at Aston Villa, racking up more than 250 appearances for the West Midlands club. He shared a dressing room with Shearer for three seasons at Ewood Park and also played for Blackpool, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough.
