Bournemouth owner Bill Foley has spoken about the Cherries tried to sign Nicolas Jackson last season – and regrets not getting over the deal the line.

Jackson joined Chelsea for £32million from Villarreal this summer after attracting attention with his blistering end-of-season form, scoring eight goals in nine games.

He netted his first Premier League goal on Friday against Luton with Mauricio Pochettino backing him to become ‘one of the greatest’ strikers in the Premier League.

It turns out that Bournemouth were so prescient as to almost sign him in January before he was a more commonly known name.

‘Nicolas Jackson, we tried to get him this year, we had him last year but he didn’t pass his medical, I believe we made a mistake and I’m sorry we didn’t get him,’ Foley told TNT Sports before Bournemouth’s match with Spurs today.

The Cherries agreed a fee in excess of £20m for the young forward last summer and fended off competition off Southampton but it collapsed at the last moment when he failed his medical.

They are still yet to bring in an out-and-out striker this summer.

Perhaps they could have done with Jackson this afternoon as they lost 2-0 at home to Spurs, who continue their fine early form under Ange Postecoglou.

James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski were on target to ensure back-to-back victories for Spurs, while Bournemouth still search for their first win of the season.
