Kai Havertz vindicates Arsenal rejecting mega-money deal after first goal

Kai Havertz has vindicated Arsenal’s decision to not go all out to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk in January. The German has scored his first goal for the Gunners before Mudryk has managed to get on the scoresheet at Chelsea.

Mudryk was undoubtedly Arsenal’s top target in the January transfer window. They were prepared to spend big and the player made it clear he was more than keen on a move to the Emirates with his social media activity.

The Ukraine star also flirted with the possibility of joining the Gunners in several media interviews. But Arsenal have a firm stance that they will not overpay for a player.

Sporting director Edu and the recruitment staff had their valuation of Mudryk and Shakhtar Donetsk’s £88million demand was deemed too high. Arsenal were even prepared to allow their No 1 target to move to London rivals Chelsea.

However, it has been a nightmare nine months for Mudryk at club level. He has already played under four managers in that time at Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard rarely gave him a chance from the start in the back end of last season. He has started to appear more regularly under Mauricio Pochettino but after 23 games for Chelsea, he is still yet to score.

Arsenal’s move for Havertz in the summer was questioned by many, including the club’s own supporters. The German has not had an easy start to life in north London but Mikel Arteta’s side are yet to lose since his arrival.

Some Chelsea supporters were pleased to see Havertz not firing for his new team and many would point out after each game that he had not yet scored or assisted. But that can now be put to bed following his first Arsenal goal on Saturday.

Havertz was handed the responsibility to take the second penalty against Bournemouth and duly obliged to make it 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium. Arsenal fans sang his name for several minutes afterwards and again after the match.

Mudryk is yet to have that moment with Chelsea fans where he feels like he belongs. Havertz still has a long way to go to completely win over every Arsenal fan – one penalty isn’t going to do that.

However, Gunners chiefs currently look vindicated to not go the extra mile for Mudryk, who has failed to adapt to Premier League football. Havertz is a different player but, almost £25m cheaper, could prove to be the better buy.
