Lisandro Martinez ‘sat down’ by Pascal Gross as Man Utd defeat goes bad to worse

Lisandro Martinez was "sat down" and "sent for a hotdog" as Manchester United were given a 3-1 humbling by Brighton.

The Red Devils were second best at Old Trafford on Saturday (September 16) afternoon, with the Seagulls taking all three points back with them to the south coast. They opened the scoring through former United man Danny Welbeck, who turned home Simon Adingra's cross.

Rasmus Hojlund thought he'd got his first goal since his £64million summer arrival before half-time, but a VAR check ruled the ball had gone out of play in the build-up. Brighton then doubled their lead after the break as Pascal Gross fired past Andre Onana.

Before doing so, Gross faked a shot in front of Martinez, who completely bought the dummy and left the space his opponent was looking for.

Rivals fans tore into the United centre-back on social media, with one posting: "Hahahah absolutely just sat down Martinez." A second echoed: "Martinez being sent for a hotdog, these United defenders really do like being sat down don’t they."

"No way Gross sent Lisandro Martinez back to Ajax," joked a third, with a fourth similarly writing: "Gross sent Martinez back to Argentina."

A fifth lapped it up as they commented: "Loved the way Gross made Lisandro dance before scoring." And a sixth argued: "Lisandro Martinez has still not recovered from Mo Salah ripping him apart."

Substitute Joao Pedro added a third for the visitors before youngster Hannibal Mejri got one back. But it proved to be a mere consolation for United, whose fans appeared to start turning on Erik ten Hag inside the ground.

His decision to take off Hojlund for Anthony Martial with the score 2-0 proved highly unpopular with boos ringing around the stands, and Cristiano Ronaldo's name could be heard in chants of "Viva Ronaldo".
