Man Utd hero Ferdinand left with ‘mouth wide open’ after Bruno Fernandes remarks

Bruno Fernandes reveals his transfer plan after leaving Man Utd: 'I'm not saying no'

Rio Ferdinand has jumped to the defence of Bruno Fernandes after being left with his ‘mouth wide open’ by remarks made about the Manchester United captain. The former defender was staggered to find the United playmaker had been criticised for his recent performances on the pitch, and Ferdinand thinks that he deserves more respect given how he contributed to their win on Saturday at Old Trafford.

Fernandes led by example with the armband and played a key role in United’s victory as they came from two goals down to beat 10-man Nottingham Forest, channelling the never-say-die spirit of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

First, he assisted Marcus Rashford’s goal with a header from a clever set-piece, then he slotted home the match-winning penalty in the second half to complete the comeback.

It proved to be a vast improvement on his performance in the 2-0 defeat against Tottenham as Fernandes hit back at his critics who questioned his selection as captain.

And Ferdinand, 44, credited the Portuguese midfielder with being the driving force behind their turnaround, claiming he had been left aghast by some of the comments directed at Fernandes.

“To go 2-0 down in any game at home, I’ve played in games at Old Trafford where a team has gone a goal or two up and we’ve managed to bring it back,” he said on FIVE’s YouTube channel.

“Yes I know it’s different times, but that’s where you have to draw your inspiration from and have to try and find some consistency and inspiration from – and the biggest gain out of all of this will be Bruno Fernandes.

“I swear to you the flack he has been getting this last week. I’ve been sitting there with my mouth wide open, thinking ‘how dare these people talk like that’.

“He’s the most creative player at this point in the season so far. He’s the first player to get 10 goal opportunities created for his team-mates out of any body. Since he’s come to the club he’s out performed every other player in terms of goals created chances made and assists.”

Ferdinand’s comments echoed Erik ten Hag glowing tribute to the 28-year-old for holding his nerve at a crucial point in the game, something Fernandes has sometimes struggled with during his three-year spell in Manchester.

“In all aspects he played a very good game, at the highest level, keeping his composure, controlling his emotions,” the United boss said. “He was great in attack, he made the difference, so I’m very happy with his performance.”
