Man Utd loanee Mason Greenwood ‘watched’ as Sir Jim Ratcliffe prepares decision

Erik ten Hag's position at Man Utd is being questioned by some

Manchester United will be keeping tabs on Mason Greenwood’s development at Getafe after pledging to help the 22-year-old forward resume his career away from Old Trafford. But an interesting name closely linked with Sir Jim Ratcliffe could suggest Greenwood’s United career isn’t over just yet.

Sir Jim could take over United’s sporting operation as early as next week after agreeing a £1.4billion deal to buy 25 per cent of the club.

The Glazer family will remain majority shareholders but have handed the INEOS founder the keys to helm the most important project at Old Trafford.

Sir Jim will reportedly look to appoint his own trusted figures in high positions once he inherits control at United.

Chief executive Richard Arnold is expected to leave his role, and John football director John Murtough is also thought to be at risk.

Widely regarded director of football, Paul Mitchell, has been heavily linked with a job at United under Sir Jim’s new regime.

He is said to be the 71-year-old’s first-choice candidate to replace Murtough, and the interest is mutual.

So, with Sir Jim’s Old Trafford arrival imminent, Mitchell’s reported attendance at a recent Getafe match has undoubtedly caught interest.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Mitchell was in the stands at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez as Greenwood faced Cadiz on Monday.

Greenwood played 86 minutes in a 1-0 win, missing a good chance before providing the assist for Borja Mayoral.

United claimed they didn’t expect their former No 11 to play for the club again, but the imminent change in power could prompt a shift in stance.

It would be a controversial start to the Sir Jim and INEOS era at United, though, given the mass backlash over Greenwood’s potential reintegration in the summer.

Richard Arnold was responsible for determining Greenwood’s future, reportedly informing staff he would be returned and filming a video explaining his decision.

Online outrage over the plans was claimed to have prompted a rapid U-turn, which saw United send him to Getafe on loan on deadline day.

Greenwood is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025, meaning next season would be his last before his release.

But he could find a lifeline in the arrival of Sir Jim and INEOS, who are expected to overhaul the sporting side and start afresh in the biggest hierarchy change at United since the Glazers’ 2005 arrival.
