Man Utd ‘planning emergency signing’ as Erik ten Hag hit with new injury blow

Manchester United are planning an emergency signing of a left-back, according to reports. Manager Erik ten Hag is hoping to act quickly after losing Luke Shaw to injury this week.

Shaw is set for a number of weeks on the sidelines with an unspecified muscular problem. The England star had started the first two Premier League matches of the season.

United are also currently without Tyrell Malacia. The Dutchman returned in pre-season with an injury and did not feature in any of the Red Devils’ friendlies.

Diogo Dalot has previously played at left-back and could fill in against Nottingham Forest this weekend. But Ten Hag is still keen to add another body to his squad in that position.

The Manchester Evening News says United are targeting a short-term deal for a left-back. Malacia’s return date is unknown, while Brandon Williams completed a loan move to Ipswich on Thursday.

United have youngster Alvaro Fernandez, who did feature in pre-season. However, the 20-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for the club and could head out on loan.

United chiefs will now be scrambling in an attempt to find a left-back between now and next Friday’s 11pm deadline. Shaw’s absence is yet another injury blow to Ten Hag after a less-than-convincing start to the new season.

Mason Mount is set for up to six weeks out with the hamstring problem he suffered in the 2-0 defeat at Tottenham. Fellow new signing Rasmus Hojlund is still yet to return to full fitness after his back injury.

Young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is not expected back until October following the ankle injury he suffered in pre-season. Amad and Tom Heaton are also out with no return dates fixed.

Lisandro Martinez is another option for Ten Hag at left-back having played in that position at previous club Ajax. However, that would disrupt his centre-back partnership with Raphael Varane.

United will be hoping for a big improvement when Forest make the trip to Old Trafford on Saturday. The Red Devils’ lifeless second-half performance at Spurs drew strong criticism from former players such as Roy Keane.

Ten Hag’s side only scraped past Wolves on the opening day after VAR wrongly decided against giving Gary O’Neil’s side a penalty in stoppage time. Forest head into the match having beaten Sheffield United 2-1 at the City Ground last time out.
