Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri has hit back at angry fans branding them ‘selfish’ in an extraordinary statement on the club’s website.

Discontent has been growing among Owls fans this season, with fans slamming the club’s ticket prices that can see concessions paying £49 for a spot in the club’s South Stand, a price higher than several Premier League clubs.

With disgruntled fans aiming their grievances, Chansiri has responded in kind, with a 1,400 word statement in which he threatened to stop funding the club and told fans they have ‘no right’ in asking him to leave.

‘To those who are trying to create trouble damaging the club, I ask, what have you done that is good for your club, why are you trying to harm it?’ The Thai businessman asked.

‘If I am such a bad owner, what are you doing on your side? We all love Sheffield Wednesday and I am a supporter as well as the owner who must love and care for the club more than anyone else because of the position I am in as chairman.

The Thai businessman called supporters ‘selfish’ and insisted he is being treated unfairly

‘I must take responsibility for everything at the club, including the financial support which is something I always do.

‘But from now, I will not put additional money into the club.

‘If you say you are the owner and I am the custodian, then show me how to be the good owner and help save your club. You want me to leave but you want me to spend money? If you want me to leave, then show me how to run the club and invest the money before I do that. You have no right to ask me to leave.

‘I am the one who saved the club and spent the money for the club, I am the one who needs to pay around £2m on average every month. Some fans need to have more respect for owners of clubs and not be so selfish, thinking of their own benefit without doing anything good to the club.

‘This is not acceptable and as a result I am not willing to inject more money while I am being treated unfairly by those fans.’

The unrest among the supporter base has led fans to propose protests against how Wednesday is being run, but Chansiri added any such action by fans would only serve to damage the club.

‘Regarding protests, I do not believe this can help our club.’ He continued.

The club have come under scrutiny this season for the price of tickets at Hillsborough

Chansiri responded that prices can only be reduced ‘if we have enough guaranteed volume’

‘The people who are trying to organise these protests are not prepared to identify themselves, while they are happy to encourage other fans to show themselves, how can this help? Protests are a waste of time.

‘I would like these fans to show me how much you love your club, do not damage it. I do not want to fight with anyone but to use your words – ‘enough is enough’. Please do not damage our own club, otherwise those fans need to take all responsibilities and liabilities.’

With administrative decisions already proving divisive, results on the pitch have only further fueled the growing disconnect between fans and the club’s hierarchy.

After achieving promotion from League One on the second time of asking via the play-offs, Supporters hoped the club could replicate Sunderland’s success last season in making an immediate impact on their return to the second tier.

However, promotion-winning boss Darren Moore and his backroom staff departed the club by mutual consent in June to be replaced by former Watford boss Xisco Munoz.

Wednesday currently sit bottom of the Championship table after returning to the second tier via the play-offs last season

The club have yet to secure a win within 90 minutes in all competitions this season, having progressed to the third round of the EFL by twice defeating League Two opposition on penalties.

Meanwhile the side sit rock bottom of the Championship, and are the only side in the league yet to win a game having earned just two points from as possible 24 from their opening eight league games.

The Owls will look to reverse their fortunes on Friday evening when they play host to Sunderland at Hillsborough in search of a win that could lift them off the bottom of the table.
