Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has warned his side against complacency ahead of this evening’s trip to Sheffield United.

The Red Devils return to action after the international break when they will be looking to build on their dramatic victory over Brentford where an injury-time brace from Scott McTominay ensured the club weren’t plunged into even deeper crisis.

However, United have still had a dismal start to the season having won four and lost four of their eight top flight matches, while they are also bottom of their Champions League group following defeats to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

And Ten Hag called on his side to step up at Bramall Lane, where they will take on a Blades side who have just one point from eight games, while he also insisted United are yet to show their top form this year.

‘Every game is very difficult,’ he told United’s official website. ‘You have seen they have had really good performances but in that moment, they don’t get the result.

‘It has shown against City and also against Spurs, who are top of the league.

‘If you don’t play your best football, you will have a problem there. So it is up to us.’

Despite their struggles – which included an 8-0 defeat to Newcastle – Sheffield United made life difficult for both Man City and Tottenham, before losing 2-1 by virtue of late goals.

And again Ten Hag insisted despite Paul Heckingbottom’s side being yet to win this season – with the Blades also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League One side Lincoln City – the decisive factor in the game will be how United’s players approach it.

Despite the Brentford win, it is still turning out to be a difficult campaign for 10th place United

He continued: ‘Again, I respect every opponent but we have to play our football.

‘We have to play our game, so make it our game and then of course, the opponent is a factor.

‘But then it is about how you play against the opponent.’

United head into the game – which kicks off at 8PM – in 10th place, and could rise to as high as seventh with a victory before they face FC Copenhagen in an almost must-win Champions League clash next Tuesday.
