‘Liverpool ace is one of the most talented I’ve worked with – he has everything’

Liverpool's Curtis Jones has everything it takes to become a leading Premier League midfielder – according to his former manager.

The 22-year-old midfielder has not been regular starter under Jurgen Klopp this season due to injury and suspension but Lee Carsley knows he has what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

Jones, who played 20 times and scored five goals for England's Under-21 side between 2020 and earlier this year, helped the Young Lions to UEFA European Under-21 Championship glory having played a key role under the former Everton man.

Carsley recently told reporters according to the Liverpool Echo: "Similar to Cole (Palmer), I'm not surprised one bit (by his progress). Curtis would be up there with the most talented players I've worked with.

"He's got everything that you need as a midfielder. He can run, he is very, very fast, he's powerful, he can score, he can assist, he can defend, he can take the ball – all he needs is opportunity.

"The way he's played when I've seen him play, he's been outstanding. He just needed to stay fit.

"I know he’s struggled sometimes with that consistency of playing but to see him take that form that he showed in the summer, that responsibility, the understanding of the position, into playing for Liverpool is brilliant to see."

Jones has made seven starts from nine appearances so far this season including in the Premier League wins over Aston Villa, Wolves and West Ham.

His red card against Tottenham was the last time he played in the league, returning for their 5-1 win over Toulouse before more time on the sidelines.

Klopp has said of Jones' injury status: "Curtis had a hamstring [injury] last week. Not massive. After the international break he will be back, but not before.

"[It is a] low, low-grade hamstring. He was in good shape, [got a] red card, lack of rhythm, got the Europa League games and then in the game at Bournemouth he didn’t feel anything there when I took him off.

"Then I went in the dressing room and I think he felt a little bit the hamstring, so we made a scan. Very low grade, but it took him out."
